Scenic point |
・Chikugogawa River
Kyushu’s largest, the Chikugo River flows through Harazuru Onsen. Starting in Horikawa, a series of triple water wheels control the floods of the Chikugo River and provides a steady supply of water to rice paddies. These triple water wheels still operate from mid-June to mid-October annually and irrigate an area of 35 hectares.
Benefitting from such valuable resources of water, the rural scenery has retained a refreshing, old-fashioned atmosphere full of deep emotion.
・Scenery from Takayama
Beyond the persimmon orchards, you can enjoy the magnificent Chikugo River and the scenery of the gentle Chikugo plain.
・Experience persimmon picking at the persimmon farm
A picking experience of Fuyuu persimmons of Haki is offered. (1kg per person)
The hand-picked persimmons will be handed out at the finish line.
・Enseiji temple
Enseiji temple was built by the Jyushin minister, Bingo Kuriyama, the first Fukuoka Clan member to venerate the Bodhi of Josui Kuroda. At this temple, Buddhist mortuary tablets and images of Josui Kuroda, Nagamasa, and Bingo are venerated. The bell housed in the tower beside the main hall is said to be the one which Nagamasa Kuroda brought back from Watarison, Hita-gun and is the oldest Korean bell in the country. In the past, it was said that the bell had miraculous powers to bring rain. Therefore, in times of drought, there was a custom to immerse this bell into the Chikugo River.
In Enseiji Temple, a zen meditation experience will be available for interested persons. (30 minutes required including explanation time)
1st session from 12:40, limited to 20 people
2nd session from 13:30, limited to 20 people
・Fumon’in
Kodaiyama Fumonji Temple has the oldest main hall in the prefecture and a minor hall with a three-way, single layer, pyramidal roof with Hongawara tiles. Reportedly, Fumonji was constructed by the monk Gyoki in the delta of the Chikugo River in Tenpyo Era 19 (747 A.D.). The temple’s name was later changed to Fumon’in, and it was relocated to the present location because of frequent flood damage. The current Fumon'in was rebuilt in the Kamakura period and is designated as a national important cultural property (special protected structure) as the oldest wooden building in the prefecture.
Due to heavy rains in northern Kyushu in 2017, the compound was damaged by earth, sand, large stones and driftwood; however, there was no damage to the main hall and restoration work has continued to the present.
・Shiwahomangu Shrine
Hakishiwa, where Shiwahomangu Shrine is located, is an old village on the right bank of the Chikugo River. The shrine is surrounded by a forest of trees that normally grow in more temperate climates and has been designated as a natural treasure of Fukuoka. If you walk along the road where you can just see the Chikugo River, pass the stone torii gate of Shiwahomangu Shrine, ascend the stone stairs to the grounds of the shrine, you will begin to see a giant camphor tree on the gentle slope to the left. According to legend, Sorin Otomo burned all the shrines and temples in the territory during the Sengoku Period and hid a sacred figure containing the spirit of a deity in the roots of this giant camphor tree.
・Oshiroi Matsuri experience (white powder festival)
The Oshiroi Matsuri is an unusual festival where locals paint their faces with fresh rice powder and water to show thanks to the gods for the prosperity of the shrine and a rich harvest and to offer prayers for the coming year.
At the event, interested participants can experience a mini face powder festival! If you are interested, please join.
・Harazuru Onsen
The well-known Harazuru Onsen, is a hot spring resort on the banks of Kyushu’s largest river, Chikugo River, in Asakura City, Fukuoka. It is famous for its ”high-quality water for beautiful women”.
The water of the hot springs of Harazuru contains sulfur and is slightly alkaline. It is popular among customers inside and outside the prefecture as a ”W (double) beauty spring” having properties that both whitens skin and removes dead skin cells.
Two popular folk tales tell about the discovery of these hot springs. The first says a fisherman discovered the hot spring while searching for a place free of snow. The second tells of a injured crane who soaked in a puddle, healed its wound, and flew away leaving a hot spring.
